HUGONOT (Chief Medical Inspector). — The Medical Service in the Battles of the Liberation. Paris: Édition de l'Association Rhin et Danube, 1953. Quarto, 182 pp., paperback, cream-colored cloth-bound cover printed in red and black, with the Medical Service emblem in color on the front cover. FIRST EDITION. A collective work edited by General Medical Inspector Georges Hugonot, devoted to the activities of the Medical Service during the Liberation campaigns and those of the First French Army. The institutional bibliography confirms the 1953 Paris edition. The book traces the organization and activities of medical units from the campaigns of the Free French Forces through to the operations of the First Army: the landing in Provence, the liberation of the mainland, the battles in the Vosges and Alsace, the crossing of the Rhine, and the campaign in Germany. It provides a fascinating documentary account of the collection and evacuation of the wounded, mobile surgical units, evacuation hospitals, and, more broadly, medical organization in close proximity to combat units. Illustrations by Roger Jouanneau-Irriera, including numerous black-and-white and color illustrations, several of which are inset. The artist himself had contributed illustrations to other works devoted to the campaigns of the First Army. A fine copy, preserved in paperback with its original cover. A few very slight marks and minor wear on the headbands and corners; the cover is slightly faded in places; the interior appears fresh. The photographed copy is significantly more attractive than many military volumes from this period.
