A BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF ONE OF KNUT HAMSUN’S MASTERPIECES, the twenty-first volume in the “Les Beaux Romans” collection. It is adorned with 47 compositions by Paul Bour reproduced in grayscale heliogravure, including the frontispiece, the title vignette, end-text compositions, and numerous illustrations within the text. Georges Sautreau’s translation is preceded by the famous preface by Octave Mirbeau, who had helped introduce Hamsun to the French public very early on. ONE OF 1,050 COPIES ON RIVES VELLUM, THIS ONE NO. 804. The proof specifies a total print run of 1,150 copies: 10 on Marais vellum with a set of engravings, 30 on Marais vellum, 60 on Dutch laid paper, and 1,050 on Rives vellum, including 50 not for sale. The book was completed on November 15, 1927, in Argenteuil, with the photogravures produced in the Chassepot workshops. COPY PRESERVED IN ITS ELEGANT PUBLISHER’S BINDING WITH FLAPS, particularly fresh for this title: light-colored cover in good condition, spine still legible, interior clean with wide margins. A few very slight marks and stains on the cover, minor wear on the head and foot and at the corners; otherwise, a fine copy in its original condition.
