BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED EDITION, FIFTH VOLUME OF HENRI JONQUIÈRES’ “LES BEAUX ROMANS” COLLECTION. The volume is adorned with 51 drawings by Albert André, including both in-text and full-page illustrations, printed in multiple tones and enhanced with color. A painter associated with Renoir, Albert André presents here a particularly free and modern style of illustration: female figures, interior scenes, seascapes, and harbor views are rendered with a lively line, accented with shades of green, blue, mauve, and gray that give the work a tonal quality very characteristic of illustrated books from the 1920s. LIMITED EDITION OF 1,180 COPIES, including 50 copies on Imperial Japan paper, 10 of which are not for sale; 30 on Van Gelder Holland paper, including 10 not for sale; and 1,100 copies on Rives vellum, including 100 not for sale, numbered from 81 to 1,080 and from 1,081 to 1,180. Printed on August 30, 1923, on the Coulouma presses in Argenteuil. ONE OF THE 1,000 NUMBERED COPIES ON RIVES VELIN INTENDED FOR SALE, THIS ONE BEING NO. 353. Copy preserved in its attractive original publisher’s paperback binding, with full margins and untrimmed. The preservation of this flap cover is noteworthy, as many copies were later rebound. A fine copy. The cover is slightly faded and dusty, with a few small marks and creases from handling; the spine is slightly browned, with minor scuffing on the head and foot and at the corners. The interior is clean and fresh overall. The binding is sturdy. The illustrations have retained their beautiful colors.
