Large 8vo, publisher’s cloth binding in olive green, front cover adorned with a large polychrome design within a gilded and black frame, gilded title; spine decorated and titled, natural edges. An illustrated edition featuring 160 figures, drawings, and photographs, as indicated on the title page. The work, conceived in the form of informal conversations, belongs to Jean-Henri Fabre’s educational style: the author makes the natural sciences and the phenomena of everyday life accessible to young readers through lively and concrete dialogue. The illustrations, which are particularly abundant, accompany the sections devoted notably to animals, insects, plants, minerals, and physical phenomena. They include numerous explanatory drawings, scientific figures, and photographic reproductions within the text. Of particular note are the plates devoted to the silkworm, bees, and the organization of the beehive, as well as various scenes illustrating the experiments and observations described. Some scuffing and minor signs of wear on the cover; corners and caps slightly worn; spine slightly faded; back cover showing a few superficial scratches. Interior clean overall, with a few scattered foxing spots and discoloration. An attractive copy, complete with its remarkable polychrome cardboard binding and its very abundant scientific illustrations.
