A beautiful illustrated edition of this novel by Marc Elder (1884–1933), winner of the 1913 Prix Goncourt for *Le Peuple de la mer*. It is the sixth volume in the “L’Amour des Livres” collection, published by René Kieffer. The book is adorned with 20 original woodcuts by Paul Baudier (1881–1962), printed in brown, including the large cover illustration, as well as ornaments and compositions integrated into the typography. LIMITED EDITION OF 1,050 COPIES, including 50 copies on Imperial Japanese paper and 1,000 copies on vellum. ONE OF THE 1,000 COPIES ON VÉLIN DE CUVE, THIS ONE NO. 423. Printed on September 10, 1925, on the presses of R. Coulouma in Argenteuil. A BEAUTIFUL COPY PRESERVED IN STAPLED BINDING, IN ITS ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATED COVER. The cover is slightly browned and dusty, with a few small foxing spots and signs of wear; the spine is slightly creased and faded, with minor wear on the head and foot and at the corners. The interior is generally fresh, with wide margins preserved and the copy untrimmed. The paperback appears sturdy.
