Large quarto, loose-leaf, with an illustrated cloth-bound cover, cardboard slipcase with a title label on the spine, and the publisher’s case. A beautiful illustrated edition featuring 66 original lithographs by Edmond Lajoux, both within the text and as full-page plates, printed in color or in two tones. The lithographs were set on stone by the artist and printed on Edmond Desjobert’s presses in Paris. First published in 1917, *Vie des Martyrs* is one of Georges Duhamel’s major literary accounts of World War I. As a military surgeon, the writer recounts his daily experiences with wounded soldiers in the front-line ambulances. Limited edition of 890 numbered copies. One of the 830 copies printed on pure-fiber Rives vellum, in a custom format, this one bearing the number 113.
