CORNEILLE (Pierre). — Complete Plays. Paris, Club du Livre Philippe Lebaud, “Héritage du Temps” series, 1973–1974. 4 substantial volumes in large square 8vo (approx. 24 × 19 cm). Text published based on the original editions, edited and preceded by a previously unpublished study by Jacques Scherer. A very fine edition illustrated with numerous original lithographs, in black and in color, created by Carrance, Lucien Fontanarosa, Pierre Henry, Lejeune, Rey Vila, Georges Rohner, and Pierre-Yves Trémois. The lithographs were printed by Fernand Mourlot. The collection brings together Corneille’s plays, notably *Mélite*, *La Place Royale*, *L’Illusion comique*, *Le Cid*, *Horace*, *Cinna*, *Polyeucte*, *La Mort de Pompée*, *Le Menteur*, *Rodogune*, *Nicomède*, *Oedipe*, *Attila*, *Suréna*, *Héraclius*, *Andromède*, *Sertorius*, *Sophonisbe*, and *Othon*, as well as the *Discours*, *Examens*, and various appendices. The fourth volume, which is particularly significant, is printed on bible paper. Superb decorative binding by the publisher in full black chagrin leather, with a spine featuring faux raised bands, a gilt title and volume number, and panels entirely adorned with gilt fleurs-de-lis; covers adorned with a very elaborate 17th-century-inspired gilt plate, composed of multiple frames of fleurons, fleurs-de-lis, and royal crowns; gilt heads. The edition was printed in a run of 3,800 numbered copies, including 300 on Dutch vellum, 700 on pure-thread paper, and 2,800 on Lana vellum. Since the proof number is not visible in the photographs, I will not specify the paper type for this copy in the entry without a photo of the proof. A beautiful set, particularly decorative. A few minor scuffs and signs of wear on the bindings, particularly on the headbands and along some of the raised bands; the gilt remains very fresh. Clean interior pages. The original individual slipcases are not included.
