A charming edition entirely calligraphed, illuminated, and decorated with historical motifs by Henri Malatesta, in an elegant medieval-inspired style. The book is lavishly decorated with color illustrations—several of which are full-page—as well as initials, headpieces, borders, and ornaments printed in red and black. The cover, also designed by Malatesta, is adorned with a large polychrome composition within a red-and-black frame. Limited edition of 1,525 copies, including 30 copies on Japanese paper featuring four states—one in black and one original watercolor by the illustrator—; 70 copies on Japanese paper featuring three states—one in black; 200 copies on fine Arches vellum with two states, including one in black; 1,200 copies on vellum; plus 25 copies on fine Holland paper with three states, including one in black. Copy on vellum, unnumbered. A lovely illustrated edition of this famous comedy by François Coppée, premiered in 1869 at the Odéon with Sarah Bernhardt in the role of Zanetto, a role that helped launch her career. A fine copy, bound in its original illustrated cover. Interior is fresh, with colors well preserved. Some minor scuffing and slight signs of wear on the cover.
