[JAKEMÈS] — CIRY (Michel). The Courtly Novels. The Lord of Coucy. Paris, Union Latine d'Éditions, Medieval Collection, 1971. Large square 8vo, publisher’s binding in full fawn sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with cold-stamped motifs, gilt title, covers richly decorated with cold stamping in the medieval style, gilt head; publisher’s slipcase. A bibliophile edition of the famous *Roman du Châtelain de Coucy et de la Dame de Fayel*, a courtly tale composed in the late 13th century and traditionally attributed to Jakemès. The text recounts the tragic legend of the love affair between the Lord of Coucy and the Lady of Fayel, one of the most famous tales associated with the medieval theme of the “devoured heart.” The book is illustrated with original compositions by Michel Ciry, appearing as separate plates, in a deliberately sober and monumental style particularly suited to the medieval world. One of the plates depicts the two lovers reunited beneath a large stylized heart. This is the original edition of this illustration, produced under the direction of Maurice Robert and printed on January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. The copy bears the notation “Collection No. H.C.” in the margin, indicating a non-commercial copy. This edition is part of the collection of courtly romances published by the Union Latine d’Éditions, which also includes *Flamenca*, *La Dame invisible*, and *Jehan et Blonde*.
