VOGÜÉ (Dom Melchior de) & NEUFVILLE (Dom Jean). — GLOSSA - Lot 306
VOGÜÉ (Dom Melchior de) & NEUFVILLE (Dom Jean). — GLOSSARY OF TECHNICAL TERMS FOR READERS OF “LA NUIT DES TEMPS” VOGÜÉ (Dom Melchior de) & NEUFVILLE (Dom Jean). — Glossary of Technical Terms for Readers of “La Nuit des Temps.” Illustrations by Dom Wenceslas Bugara. Saint-Léger-Vauban, Éditions Zodiaque, “Introductions to La Nuit des Temps” series, No. 1, 1965. A substantial square in-8 volume, bound in the publisher’s full cloth, with a color-illustrated dust jacket. 473 pages, lavishly illustrated with black-and-white photographs, drawings, diagrams, and explanatory figures. This is indeed the original 1965 edition; the INHA bibliography lists this collation as 473 pages; the work was subsequently revised and corrected by Raymond Oursel, notably for the second edition of 1971. A very interesting reference work devoted to the vocabulary of medieval art and architecture, conceived as a supplement to the volumes of the famous *La Nuit des Temps* collection. Technical terms from architecture, sculpture, archaeology, and the decorative arts are defined and richly illustrated: parts of the church, types of apses, vaults, columns and capitals, masonry, furnishings, liturgical objects, etc. This book is the first volume in the “Introductions to La Nuit des Temps” series. The illustrations, which are particularly educational, alternate between full-page photographs, labeled diagrams, and line drawings by Dom Wenceslas Bugara. The glossary also provides equivalents for many terms in several languages, making it a true technical dictionary of ancient architecture. The interior is in good condition. The binding is intact. The original dust jacket is quite worn, showing scuffing, tears, and small losses, particularly at the top and bottom caps, the corners, and the bottom of the front cover; the spine is faded. Nevertheless, the book is complete and perfectly usable.
