VAN KOOTEN (Toos) & VAN DEN HEUVEL (Gerard), eds. - Lot 296
VAN KOOTEN (Toos) & VAN DEN HEUVEL (Gerard), eds. SCULPTURE FROM AFRICA AND OCEANIA. A selection from the collections of members of the Association of Friends of Ethnographica. With contributions by W. van Damme, F. Herreman, and D. Smidt. Otterlo, Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, 1990. A substantial in-4 volume, paperback, with an illustrated softcover in color, 371 pp., abundant photographic illustrations in black-and-white and color, maps, and a bibliography. Bilingual text in Dutch and English. ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE EXHIBITION CATALOG organized at the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller in Otterlo, from November 17, 1990, to January 20, 1991. The volume features 135 black-and-white and color reproductions of a selection of works from the collections of members of the Association of Friends of Ethnographica. An important catalog devoted to the traditional arts of Africa and Oceania, featuring sculptures, masks, reliquary figures, and ritual objects. Each piece is accompanied by a photographic reproduction—often full-page—along with a detailed description in Dutch and English specifying, among other things, its geographic origin, ethnic group, materials, dimensions, and ritual function. It notably includes works from Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other regions of Africa, as well as a significant collection from Oceania. The specialized bibliography provides detailed descriptions of 82 African works and 53 Oceanic works, for a total of 135 pieces reproduced. The catalog remains of genuine documentary interest today regarding the provenance of primitive art: certain works published in this exhibition continue to be cited in specialized auction catalogs. For example, Christie’s still mentioned a work reproduced in this catalog as recently as 2026, with a specific reference to the 1990–1991 Otterlo exhibition. A fine copy. Some slight scuffing and signs of wear on the cover; interior is fresh and well-preserved.
