PIERRE BERGÉ & ASSOCIÉS — PRIMITIVE ART — DROUOT, DECEMB - Lot 254
PIERRE BERGÉ & ASSOCIÉS — PRIMITIVE ART — DROUOT, DECEMBER 18, 2002 [PRIMITIVE ART]. — Primitive Art Auction. Paris, Pierre Bergé & Associés, Drouot Richelieu, Room 13, Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at 2:15 p.m. Auction catalog, in-4 format, paperback, white cover illustrated in color with a collection of African statuettes, red banner, and black and red lettering. 64 pp., 245 lots, very richly illustrated with photographic reproductions, mainly in color. These bibliographic details are confirmed by a copy currently listed on the market. The catalog brings together two main sections: archaeology and antique glassware, followed by a substantial section devoted to African art and what were then referred to as “primitive” arts. The objects are reproduced in color and accompanied by detailed descriptions including cultural and geographic attribution, materials, dimensions, provenance, relevant bibliography, and estimates. The section devoted to African art features, in particular, masks, statuettes, chairs, ritual objects, and objects of prestige, with works attributed to the Lega, Dan, Baoulé, Senufo, Luba, Congo, and other cultures. Some pieces are documented with historical provenance records listed in the catalog: notably, there are references to sales from the 1990s and private collections. This provenance documentation is now the primary value of these older catalogs for collectors and researchers of African art. The photographs, often full-page or grouping several lots together, are of excellent quality. The catalog thus serves as a reference work on the Parisian African art market in the early 2000s, particularly useful for tracing the provenance and sales history of objects that later reappeared on the market. A very fine copy, with virtually no visible flaws; the cover and interior are in excellent condition.
