PASCAL — THE WORLD OF THE CRYPTS - Lot 249
PASCAL — THE WORLD OF THE CRYPTS PASCAL (Blaise). — The World of the Crypts. Texts by Pascal. Introduction by Dom Claude Jean-Nesmy. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “Les Points cardinaux” series, No. 22, 1973. Square in-4 (approx. 26 × 22 cm), 196 pp. and table of contents, publisher’s binding, full cloth, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. Numerous black-and-white and color photographs, maps, plans, and documents. The institutional catalog entry lists 195 pages and confirms the 1973 Zodiaque edition as well as its inclusion in the “Les Points cardinaux” collection. First edition. A beautiful photographic work devoted to the architectural, historical, and spiritual world of Christian crypts, viewed as the physical and symbolic foundations of sanctuaries. The book combines this extensive photographic documentation with selected texts by Blaise Pascal, excerpts from the *Pensées*, preceded by an introduction by Dom Claude Jean-Nesmy. The illustrations, particularly well-curated as is often the case in the Les Points cardinaux collection, feature crypts, underground chambers, vaults, columns, capitals, and liturgical elements, with numerous full-page and double-page photographs. This copy allows readers to appreciate the remarkable photographic compositions that play with the volumes, perspectives, and light of these subterranean spaces. Good copy. Clean and well-preserved interior. Sturdy binding. Dust jacket intact, with some scuffing, small tears, and wear along the edges—particularly on the top and bottom flaps and at the corners—but no significant apparent damage. Some signs of wear.
