MUSSET (Lucien). — Romanesque Normandy. Volume II: Upper Nor - Lot 237
MUSSET (Lucien). — Romanesque Normandy. Volume II: Upper Normandy. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Zodiaque, 1974. “La Nuit des Temps” series, No. 41. Large square 8vo, 317 pp., publisher’s full beige cloth binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. First edition of this second volume devoted to Romanesque Normandy, following the volume on Lower Normandy published in 1967. The book was written by Lucien Musset, professor of history at the U.E.R. (University Extension Program) of the University of Caen. German translation by G. Schecher and English translation by Alan McLeer. Previously unpublished photographs by Zodiaque. The specialized bibliography confirms the 1974 edition, the page count of 317 pp., and its inclusion in the *La Nuit des Temps* series, No. 41. An important study devoted to Romanesque architecture and sculpture in Upper Normandy, primarily in the present-day departments of Eure and Seine-Maritime. The author examines major monastic and religious complexes as well as a large number of lesser-known buildings: Jumièges, Bernay, Rouen, Saint-Georges-de-Boscherville, Saint-Wandrille, Fiquefleur, Ivry-la-Bataille, etc. The work remains a documentary reference regularly cited in studies devoted to Norman Romanesque heritage. It features the abundant illustrations characteristic of Zodiaque publications, consisting of full-page black-and-white photographs and inset images, supplemented by plans, elevations, and architectural documents. Includes a table of plates and an index. A professional bibliography describes the two volumes of *Normandie romane* as containing a total of 304 black-and-white photogravures and 7 color photographic reproductions, in addition to numerous plans, figures, and maps. A beautiful copy, complete with its illustrated dust jacket, which shows only very slight rubbing and minor signs of wear on the head and foot and at the corners; the cloth binding and interior are in very fresh condition.
