MÜLLER (Commander Victor). — In Syria with the Bedouins. The Tribes of the Desert. Paris, Librairie Ernest Leroux, 1931. In-8°, XII-347 pp., paperback with the publisher’s printed cover, 9 maps and sketches, including 3 fold-outs. First edition of this important ethnographic, geographic, and political study devoted to the Bedouin populations of Syria under the French Mandate. The colation of XII-347 pp. and the 9 maps is confirmed by contemporary bibliographic and commercial descriptions. In this work, Commander Victor Müller brings together the results of six years spent living among the nomadic tribes. René Dussaud, reviewing the work as early as 1932 in the journal *Syria*, highlights the particularly direct nature of Müller’s experience and the value of his observations on the tribes, their political and social organization, their relationships, as well as their customs and traditions. The book examines, in particular, the Bedouin region, the major areas of nomadism and transhumance, the various tribes and their leaders, their population sizes, the gradual shift to a sedentary lifestyle, and the relations between the Bedouins and the French administration. The tables provide precise information on the tribes and their populations; taken together, the work now constitutes a primary documentary source on Syria in the 1920s. This copy bears an old signature on the half-title page. Condition: paperback copy in its original cover, but showing significant wear: cover heavily discolored and pitted, scuffing and losses to the head and foot, spine very worn with cracks and peeling, significant paper loss on the back cover. A few foxing spots and marginal stains. The text block, however, is still intact.
