MEYER (Anthony J. P.) Oceanic Art - Ozeanische Kunst - Art O - Lot 230
MEYER (Anthony J. P.) Oceanic Art - Ozeanische Kunst - Art Océanien. Photographs by Olaf Wipperfürth. Cologne, Könemann, 1995. Large, sturdy in-4 volume (approx. 32 × 28 cm), publisher’s black cloth binding with gilt title, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket, 640 pp. First edition of this monumental study devoted to the arts of Oceania, published simultaneously in English, German, and French. The work is also available as a two-volume box set, with identical content and pagination. Text by Anthony J. P. Meyer, a Paris-based specialist and dealer in Oceanic art, accompanied by photographs by Olaf Wipperfürth. Extensive iconography comprising 731 color and black-and-white illustrations, as well as maps. A comprehensive overview of the three major cultural regions of Oceania: Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia. The author examines, in particular, the arts of New Guinea and the Sepik, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa, as well as Polynesian and Micronesian art. Masks, ancestor figures, ceremonial sculptures, weapons, ornaments, ritual objects, and objects of prestige are extensively reproduced and precisely described. Several works from public and private collections were reproduced here for the first time, lending the book significant documentary value. The photography, executed with particular care, emphasizes large-scale reproductions and allows for a very precise examination of materials, patinas, and sculpted details. The book remains an important general reference on Oceanic art; a specialized bookstore still describes it as likely one of the best general introductions to the field. A fine copy. The interior is in very fresh condition and richly illustrated. The dust jacket is intact, showing only slight signs of handling and a few small creases or signs of wear visible on the photographs. The binding and book block are in very good apparent condition.
