LOJENDIO (Dom Luis-Maria de). — ROMANESQUE NAVARRE. - Lot 213
LOJENDIO (Dom Luis-Maria de). — ROMANESQUE NAVARRE. LOJENDIO (Dom Luis-Maria de). — Romanesque Navarre. Introduction by Georges Gaillard. Text by Dom Luis-Maria de Lojendio, O.S.B., monk of Leyre. Translated from the Spanish by Dom Norbert Vaillant, O.S.B. Previously unpublished photographs by Zodiaque. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “La Nuit des Temps” series, no. 26, 1967. Substantial square in-8 volume (approx. 22 × 17 cm), 399 pp., publisher’s full cloth binding, with a color-illustrated dust jacket and original cardboard slipcase. First edition of this important volume in the “La Nuit des Temps” series devoted to the Romanesque art of Navarre. The book is preceded by an introduction by art historian Georges Gaillard, a specialist in Spanish Romanesque sculpture and the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela; “Romanesque Navarre” was, in fact, one of the last publications to which he contributed before his death in 1967. A comprehensive study of Navarre’s Romanesque heritage: Leyre, Estella, Pamplona, Sangüesa, as well as the numerous churches and sculpted ensembles dotting the pilgrimage routes. The book serves as an important resource on the architecture, sculpted portals and capitals, iconography, and various artistic centers of medieval Navarre. Extensive iconography including 145 black-and-white photographs and 10 color photographs, most of which are reproduced full-page, along with plans and documents. The photographs are described as previously unpublished and were taken by Zodiaque. A beautiful, complete copy with its illustrated dust jacket and original slipcase. The interior is fresh and well-preserved. The dust jacket shows only a few minor scuffs and small signs of wear on the top and bottom edges and at the corners. The original slipcase is intact, with scuffing, minor soiling, and wear at the corners, but it is sturdy.
