LIÉNART (Achille, Cardinal) — LECONTE (René) — DURAN (Frédér - Lot 212
LIÉNART (Achille, Cardinal) — LECONTE (René) — DURAN (Frédérique). In the Footsteps of Jesus. Paris, Librairie Hachette, 1953. Large quarto, 123 pp. [3], paperback with cloth binding and illustrated photographic dust jacket. Foreword by His Eminence Cardinal Achille Liénart, Bishop of Lille; historical and archaeological introduction by Father René Leconte, professor at the Catholic Faculties of Lille; photographs by Frédérique Duran. FIRST EDITION. The book includes extensive photographic illustrations: 60 black-and-white heliogravure plates and 8 color insert plates, devoted to Palestine and the sites associated with the life of Christ. Institutional bibliographic records confirm the 1953 Hachette edition, measuring approximately 30 × 24 cm. A beautiful photographic album from the famous Hachette collection “Dans les pas… ,” in which Frédérique Duran captures the landscapes and monuments of the Holy Land in the early 1950s: Bethlehem, Acre, Mount Carmel, Judea, Jerusalem, and Golgotha, alternating between monumental views, landscapes, and ancient architecture. The book’s significance today lies as much in its subject matter as in its photographic record of Palestine and Jerusalem prior to the urban transformations of the second half of the 20th century. A copy of this first edition, which also comes with a dust jacket and is listed as containing 60 photogravures and 8 color plates, is described as a “First edition” by a specialized American bookseller. Complete copy with its original photographic dust jacket. The book block is in good condition, with a clean interior and well-preserved photographs. The dust jacket is heavily worn, with scuffing, creases, tears, and significant missing sections on the back cover and at the top; a few old repairs are visible. Despite these flaws, its condition is still quite good.
