LE JARDIN DES ARTS — No. 15 — January 1956 - Lot 197
LE JARDIN DES ARTS — No. 15 — January 1956 LE JARDIN DES ARTS. — No. 15, January 1956. Paris, Éditions Tallandier, 1956. Quarto, paperback, color-illustrated cover depicting the Sacré-Cœur Basilica and a street in Montmartre, numerous black-and-white photographs and illustrations. Original price: 200 francs. Issue No. 15 of the monthly magazine *Le Jardin des Arts*, edited by René Wittmann. An interesting issue devoted to the history of French and Italian art, sculpture, illumination, the decorative arts, and modern painting. Highlights include: Pierre du Colombier, “The Sienese School at the Museum of Siena”; Solange Doumic, “The Hôtel Chanac de Pompadour”; J.-B. Carpeaux, “Sculptor, Painter, and Draftsman” by J.-A. Cartier; Early Works by Bourdelle; Jean Porcher, “The Master of Rohan, a Great 15th-Century French Painter”; Madeleine Fuchs, “Modern Window Decor”; Michèle Beaulieu, “Theater and French Sculpture in the 18th Century”; “Picasso in Front of the Camera”; Yvonne Brunhammer and Monique Ricour, “French Furniture in the First Half of the 18th Century”; Jean Dagron, “Sylvain Vigny, Visionary and Romantic Painter.” In addition, the issue features the usual columns devoted to books, galleries, and current events in the art world. Bourdelle and the Master of Rohan Two articles make this issue particularly noteworthy. The study on Antoine Bourdelle’s early works features reproductions of drawings and sculptures held at the Bourdelle Museum and examines the sculptor’s training and his initial explorations. The article by Jean Porcher, then chief curator of manuscripts at the National Library, is devoted to the Master of Rohan, one of the leading figures in 15th-century French illumination, focusing in particular on the famous Rohan Hours. It is accompanied by reproductions of manuscripts from the National Library. Picasso Also worth noting is the article “Picasso in Front of the Camera,” which serves as a highlight of the catalog: Picasso remains, of course, one of the most sought-after names in art journals of this period. The issue also features, at the beginning of the volume, a particularly graphic full-page advertisement for two books devoted to Picasso and Paul Klee, in the Ars Mundi collection. Decorative Arts and Advertising The back cover features a color reproduction of four textile designs marketed by Victor Coates, located at 20 rue des Petits-Champs in Paris: “Philodendrons” chintz, “Le Petit Caporal” printed rep, “Vallauris” printed rep, and “Be-Bop” printed rep. This color advertisement, highly characteristic of the graphic design and home textiles of the 1950s, serves as a lovely documentary addition. Shows signs of use, but the interior is perfectly presentable. The cover is slightly scuffed and soiled, with wear and small creases at the corners and edges; there are small tears and marginal fragility, particularly at the lower corners and along the spine. A few marks and signs of use. The interior is relatively fresh and clean, with a slight patina on the paper. There is a small, old pencil annotation (“for sale”) at the top of the first study. The binding still appears sound.
