COLOMBIAN ART THROUGH THE CENTURIES — Petit Palais, 1975–197 - Lot 187
COLOMBIAN ART THROUGH THE CENTURIES — Petit Palais, 1975–1976 [EXHIBITION - PRE-COLOMBIAN ART - COLOMBIA]. — Colombian Art Through the Centuries. Paris, Association française d'Action artistique, 1975. Catalog of the exhibition held at the Petit Palais, November 1975–February 1976. In-4° format, approximately [98] unnumbered pages, lavishly illustrated in black-and-white and color, with a color photographic cover. The BnF specifies [98] pages and a size of 24 cm. Catalog of the major exhibition at the Petit Palais Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition “Colombian Art Through the Centuries,” organized jointly by the Colombian Institute of Culture and the French Association for Artistic Action. The authors of the catalog are Susana Monzon, Béatrice Riottot El-Habib, and Catherine Tieck. The exhibition was held at the Petit Palais from November 7, 1975, to February 15, 1976. The book offers a broad overview of Colombian art, from pre-Columbian civilizations through the colonial period and into the centuries that followed. In particular, it features stone sculptures, ceramics, pre-Columbian gold and silverwork, objects from the Gold Museum in Bogotá, paintings, and religious art from the colonial period. The Paris Musées collections also classify the book under the categories of painting, sculpture, ceramics, and gold and silverwork. The photographs notably feature remarkable goldwork from the Cauca Valley, including several diadems from the Gold Museum in Bogotá, as well as important religious works from the viceroyalty era. Strictly speaking, it is not a rare book, but it is a good documentary catalog on pre-Columbian Colombian art, far more interesting than a mere popular science book. It has three selling points: its relative age (1975), its connection to a major institutional exhibition at the Petit Palais, and, above all, the richness of its illustrations devoted to Colombian collections. The BnF holds three copies, while Paris Musées also holds copies in the Petit Palais’s documentary collections. Good copy. Cover is intact, with some scuffing and minor signs of wear visible, particularly at the corners and along the spine. Interior is clean and fresh. No visible major structural defects.
