KRAFFT (Hugues) — KOECHLIN (Raymond) - Lot 181
KRAFFT (Hugues) — KOECHLIN (Raymond) The Hugues Krafft Collection. Works of Art from the Orient and the Far East. Works of art from the Orient, Persia, Asia Minor, and Egypt; earthenware, engraved copperware, ironware, miniatures; ceramics from China and Japan, Japanese lacquerware, suzuri-bako, inro, kobako, Noh masks, wooden and ivory netsuke, bronzes and cloisonné enamels, weapons and sword guards, prints and paintings by Toyonobu, Sharaku, etc., art books and catalogs, embroidered and brocaded fabrics. Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Room No. 8, February 26 and 27, 1925. Paris, Imprimerie Lahure, 1925. Quarto, III-33 pp. and 10 plates, paperback, in the publisher’s folder with flaps, title printed in blue, red, and green on the front cover. Preface by Raymond Kœchlin. Auction catalog compiled with Henri Leman and André Portier, experts, under the supervision of F. Lair-Dubreuil and Henri Baudoin, auctioneers. The colation of III-33 pp. and 10 plates is confirmed by several institutional references. Catalog of the famous dispersal of the Hugues Krafft collection, assembled primarily during his travels in the Far East. The auction comprised 273 lots and dispersed the bulk of his collections of Oriental art, with a very strong representation of Chinese and Japanese art. The INHA notably highlights, among the remarkable pieces cited by Kœchlin, a print by Sharaku, a Japanese bronze incense burner, a Mosul tray, and a Rassoulid candlestick. This copy comes from Victor Bouchet and bears his purple stamp “V. Bouchet, Instituteur” twice, one of which is accompanied by the handwritten note “Dreux-Villamel, February 21, 1925.” This date, five days before the auction opened, is noteworthy and lends the copy a bit of additional documentary value. The folder is slightly worn and darkened, with some scuffing, creases, and small tears on the spine and at the joints; there are a few foxing spots and stains. The body of the catalog is nevertheless well-preserved. Complete with all 10 plates.
