KAUFMANN (Christian) — Masks of Oceania: An Introduction to - Lot 177
KAUFMANN (Christian) — Masks of Oceania: An Introduction to Melanesian Art Geneva, Barbier-Mueller Museum, 1984 [1985 on the title page of this copy]. Quarto, paperback, color-illustrated cover, 16 pp., 6 color illustrations, and a map. A catalog devoted to the masks of Melanesia, with an introduction by Christian Kaufmann, then curator at the Basel Museum of Ethnography. Features pieces from New Britain, New Ireland, and other regions of Melanesia, reproduced in color and accompanied by detailed ethnographic descriptions. A small but very appealing catalog from the Barbier-Mueller Museum, notable for the quality of the objects reproduced and for the text’s focus on the ritual and social functions of Melanesian masks. A fine copy. Cover slightly scuffed at the corners and slight wear on the spine; interior in very fresh condition.
