JUNYENT (Édouard). — ROMANESQUE CATALONIA. II. - Lot 176
JUNYENT (Édouard). — ROMANESQUE CATALONIA. II. JUNYENT (Édouard). — Romanesque Catalonia. Volume II. Foreword by Jean Ainaud de Lasarte. Previously unpublished photographs by Jean Dieuzaide. Translated from Catalan by Emmanuel Companys. German and English translations by Dom Albert Delfosse, Hilaire de Vos, and Pamela Clarke. Saint-Léger-Vauban, Éditions Zodiaque, Abbaye de la Pierre-qui-Vire, 1961. Square 8vo, 307 pages, publisher’s unbleached cloth binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket; numerous black-and-white and color photographic reproductions, maps, and plans. “La Nuit des Temps” series, No. 13. Special summer issue of the journal Zodiaque, 1961. First edition of this second volume of the monumental *Catalogne romane*, the first volume of which had been published the previous year. The set constitutes one of the first major photographic surveys devoted to Catalan Romanesque art in the famous Zodiaque collection. The two volumes were published in 1960 and 1961 and were acclaimed upon their release for the significance of their documentation and their abundant illustrations. This second volume focuses in particular on Sant Pau del Camp, Sant Benet de Bages, the Cathedral of Girona, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Santa Maria de l’Estany, and La Seu d’Urgell, as well as the paintings, sculptures, and works of art associated with them. It includes a very extensive collection of photographs, comprising 108 plates, accompanied by maps and architectural drawings. The original photographs by Jean Dieuzaide (1921–2003) lend the work added interest: they are fully integral to the highly recognizable aesthetic of the first volumes of *La Nuit des Temps*, where photography is not limited to documenting the architecture but contributes to its visual interpretation. A complete copy with its illustrated dust jacket, though the jacket is in fair condition: heavily rubbed, with the outer layer worn away, along with tears, missing sections, and old tape repairs, particularly at the top and bottom flaps and along the edges. The publisher’s cloth binding is also slightly worn at the ends. The book block remains in satisfactory condition.
