HOPPENOT (Hélène) — HOPPENOT (Henri) FAR EAST. - Lot 162
HOPPENOT (Hélène) — HOPPENOT (Henri) FAR EAST. Photographs by Hélène Hoppenot. Text by Henri Hoppenot. Neuchâtel and Paris, Éditions Ides et Calendes, 1951. Quarto (approx. 28 × 22 cm), publisher’s hardcover with original photographic dust jacket, illustrated on both covers with a Buddha’s head. 88 black-and-white photographs by Hélène Hoppenot, reproduced by heliogravure, mostly full-page or double-page spreads. Collection des Ides photographiques, No. 1. Bibliographic sources confirm the 1951 edition and the 88 photographs. FIRST EDITION. First volume of the remarkable *Collection des Ides photographiques*, conceived in a spirit similar to the great photographic albums of the Guilde du Livre. A recent bibliography devoted to women photographers specifically highlights this connection and provides the collation: [10], 88, [6] pages. A beautiful photographic album resulting from the numerous trips to Asia by Hélène Hoppenot (1896–1990), a photographer and avid traveler. Her images offer less a documentary record than a genuine photographic vision of the Far East: landscapes, architecture and shrines, street scenes, ceremonies, portraits, and daily life. The often highly composed framing and expressive use of black and white give certain double-page spreads the true quality of a photobook. The volume is all the more interesting as it is one of Hélène Hoppenot’s major photography books, alongside *China* (1946), Tunisia (1952), Mexico, Mayan Magic (1954), and Guatemala (1955). A very complete copy with its original photographic dust jacket. The dust jacket shows significant wear: scuffing, small tears, and marginal tears; missing pieces at the corners and along the top edge; and a pronounced crease on the back cover. The interior appears clean and well-preserved. The dust jacket remains a valuable feature, however, as many copies have lost this fragile cover.
