HENRY (Françoise). — IRISH ART. Volume II. - Lot 155
HENRY (Françoise). — IRISH ART. Volume II. HENRY (Françoise). — Irish Art. Volume II. Previously unpublished photographs by Pierre Belzeaux. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “La Nuit des Temps” series, No. 19, 1964. A substantial volume in large square 8vo (approx. 23 × 18 cm), 305 pp., publisher’s full purple cloth binding, with a color-illustrated dust jacket and original cardboard slipcase. Second volume of the monumental study by Françoise Henry (1902–1982) devoted to Irish art of the Early Middle Ages. The complete set, published in three volumes in 1963–1964 in *La Nuit des Temps* (Nos. 18–20), is one of the major reference works on medieval Irish art. The institutional bibliography confirms that this Volume II corresponds to No. 19 in the series, published in 1964. This second volume is primarily devoted to developments in Irish art during the 9th and 10th centuries, continuing the chronological study begun in the first volume. The book is remarkably well illustrated: 112 hors-texte photogravures, 16 color plates, 8 documentary plates, as well as 41 figures, maps, and plans. The previously unpublished photographs are by Pierre Belzeaux. Monastic architecture, large stone crosses, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, liturgical objects, and metalwork make up a particularly rich body of iconographic material. A contemporary review described the three-volume set as a veritable compendium of Irish art, covering the period from prehistory to the Franco-Norman invasion of the 12th century; the trilogy comprises approximately 308, 305, and 303 pages, respectively, and includes over 500 plates. A fine copy, complete with its illustrated dust jacket and original slipcase. Interior in very fresh condition. Binding well preserved. Dust jacket in good condition, with some slight rubbing and minor signs of wear at the edges. Slipcase present, with wear and small tears at the corners and edges.
