HENRY (Françoise). — IRISH ART. III. - Lot 154
HENRY (Françoise). — IRISH ART. III. HENRY (Françoise). — Irish Art. Volume III. Unpublished photographs by Pierre Belzeaux. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “La Nuit des Temps” series, No. 20, 1964. Large, substantial in-8 volume (approx. 23 × 18 cm), 308 pp., publisher’s full cloth binding, with a color-illustrated dust jacket. Extensive photographic illustrations in black-and-white and color, accompanied by reproductions of manuscripts, sculptures, high crosses, and monuments from medieval Ireland. First edition. The third and final volume of Françoise Henry’s monumental study of Irish art. The complete series appeared in three volumes in 1963–1964 in *La Nuit des Temps*, under nos. 18–20. The third volume comprises 308 pages. Together with the two preceding volumes, this work constitutes a fundamental compendium on Irish art, from prehistory through the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century. The study by Françoise Henry, then director of studies at University College Dublin, remains particularly significant for Irish Christian art: illuminated manuscripts, interlacing and zoomorphic motifs, gold and silverwork, monastic architecture, and above all the remarkable carved high crosses, which are abundantly reproduced in this volume. The collection was hailed upon its publication as a major synthesis on the subject. The editorial quality is typical of Zodiaque’s heyday: photographs by Pierre Belzeaux, large full-page spreads, close-ups of carvings, and spectacular color reproductions of illuminated manuscripts. The three volumes contain more than 500 plates, some in color. A fine copy. The interior is fresh and well-preserved. The binding is sturdy. The dust jacket is intact, with some scuffing and signs of wear, particularly on the front cover and the edges; a small tear at the top cap is visible in the photographs. Nevertheless, the set is very presentable overall.
