GUIDON (Niède). — Prehistoric Paintings of Brazil. The Cave - Lot 149
GUIDON (Niède). — Prehistoric Paintings of Brazil. The Cave Art of Piauí. Paris, Éditions Recherche sur les Civilisations (ERC), 1991. Large quarto, 109-[1] pp., extensively illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, including 63 color plates; publisher’s black hardcover with a color-illustrated dust jacket. Original French edition. The BnF confirms the 1991 Paris ERC edition; the work is also cataloged as having 110 pages and 63 color plates. An important monograph by the Franco-Brazilian archaeologist Niède Guidon, devoted to the rock paintings and engravings of Piauí, and particularly to the São Raimundo Nonato archaeological site. The book presents, with extensive photographic documentation, the cave art ensembles, their documentation, and their study: human and animal figures, group scenes, geometric representations, painting techniques, superimpositions, and methods of archaeological documentation. It is a notable work in the history of the study of Brazilian rock art: Niède Guidon herself referred to it as one of the publications that helped bring international attention to the research conducted in Piauí. The photographs include, in particular, beautiful full-color double-page spreads reproducing the paintings in situ, as well as methodological documentation of the rock panels. GUIDON, Niède. Prehistoric Paintings of Brazil: The Rock Art of Piauí. Paris, ERC, 1991. 109/110 pp., 63 color plates, 32 × 25 cm. The Mollat catalog entry also lists the EAN 9782865382156. Very good copy, in its illustrated dust jacket, with slight scuffing on the top and bottom edges and at the corners. Interior is in very fresh condition.
