GROUSSET (René). — From Greece to China. - Lot 145
GROUSSET (René). — From Greece to China. "Orient and the Far East" series, edited by René Grousset. Monaco, Les Documents d'Art, 1948. Large quarto, red publisher’s cardboard binding, title printed in black on the front cover and spine, numerous black-and-white and color photographic reproductions, fold-out maps. First edition, copy numbered 1034 of 3,300. An important work by René Grousset (1885–1952), historian of Asian civilizations, curator of the Cernuschi Museum and later the Guimet Museum, and member of the Académie française. The Académie Française does indeed list *From Greece to China* among its works published in 1948. The work constitutes the first volume of the “Orient and Far East” series, published under Grousset’s direction. The print run information visible in this copy states: “The print run of this work was limited to 3,300 copies numbered from 1 to 3,300,” in addition to a few non-commercial copies. This copy bears the number 1,034. Printed on October 12, 1948, with heliogravures by La S.A. Photochromes by Lainière, four-color prints by Photogravure Moderne, text and four-color prints printed by Imprimerie Studium, bound by the Brodard and Taupin workshops, and cover designed by Robert Devoucoux. The book examines artistic and cultural exchanges between the Mediterranean world, India, Central Asia, and China, with a particular focus on the spread of Hellenism to the East, the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhāra, and exchanges along ancient trade routes. The illustrations are particularly well-crafted: numerous photographic reproductions in heliogravure, color plates, and fold-out maps, including the large map of trade routes in Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages visible on your copy. An institutional bibliographic description lists the work as published in Monaco in 1948 as part of the *Orient et Extrême-Orient* series, No. 1. Spine faded with small tears at the top; no dust jacket.
