GROSLIER (George). — Ancient Khmer Sculpture. - Lot 142
GROSLIER (George). — Ancient Khmer Sculpture. Paris, Les Éditions G. Crès & Cie, 1925. French Collection of Oriental Arts. Large 8vo (approx. 26 cm), paperback with the publisher’s printed cover, II-89 pp., one map, and 155 plates, containing a total of 175 halftone reproductions. The collation is confirmed by several institutional copies. First edition of this important monograph by George Groslier (1887–1945), then director of Cambodian Arts, devoted to ancient Khmer sculpture. The work constitutes one of the first major attempts at a general synthesis of Khmer sculpture. In the review published by the École française d’Extrême-Orient in 1927, Victor Goloubew specifically emphasizes this innovative nature: this is not a mere repetition of Groslier’s previous works, but a new work offering, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of this art form. Groslier successively examines general aspects of Khmer sculpture, religions and iconography, the artists and their working conditions, statuary, depictions of the Buddha, bas-reliefs, architectural and decorative sculpture, bronze, the geographical distribution of the works, and external influences. The extensive photographic documentation features statues, deities, bas-reliefs, and decorative elements from, among other sources, the Museum of Cambodia, the temples of Angkor, and numerous sites that had been little studied at the time. The map at the beginning of the book locates the main sites mentioned by the author. Condition: paperback copy in its original cover. The cover is slightly browned and dusty, with some rubbing, small stains, and signs of wear; there is a small tear at the top of the spine and slight wear on the corners. The interior is particularly fresh and clean, and the plates are well-preserved. A very satisfactory copy overall.
