GOETZMANN (William H.) — The First Americans - Lot 138
GOETZMANN (William H.) — The First Americans GOETZMANN (William H.). — The First Americans. French edition. Paris, PML Éditions / Bibliothèque de l'Image, 1995. Large quarto, publisher’s illustrated hardcover. Extensive black-and-white photographic illustrations devoted to the Indigenous peoples of North America, drawn primarily from the photographic collections of the Library of Congress. Text by William H. Goetzmann, French translation by Catherine Bednarek. The original American edition is copyright Starwood Publishing, 1991; legal deposit of this French edition: 1995. The book brings together photographs taken between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, including numerous images by Edward S. Curtis, as well as by Benjamin A. Gifford, C. S. Bradford, Adam Clark Vroman, and other photographers. Portraits, scenes of daily life, dwellings, and ceremonies come together to form a particularly rich documentary collection. The book’s significance also lies in its critical approach: Goetzmann situates these images within the context of the conquest of the West and analyzes how photography helped shape the American public’s perception of Native American peoples. Condition: good copy. Hardcover intact, with some superficial marks, scuffs, and small visible scratches on the covers; slight wear on the corners and headbands. Interior clean and well-preserved.
