GILLET (Louis). — HISTORY OF FRENCH ART. II. FROM VOUET TO M - Lot 136
GILLET (Louis). — HISTORY OF FRENCH ART. II. FROM VOUET TO MANET. GILLET (Louis). — History of French Art. 2: From Vouet to Manet. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “Introductions à la Nuit des Temps” series, 1976. Substantial square in-8 volume, full cloth binding by the publisher, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. Extensive black-and-white and color illustrations, both full-page and within the text. The second part of the comprehensive survey devoted by Louis Gillet, of the Académie Française, to the history of art in France. This volume covers a particularly fruitful period, from the 17th century to the birth of modern art, from Simon Vouet to Édouard Manet: French painting, sculpture, and architecture are examined through their major movements and masters, accompanied by the extensive photographic documentation characteristic of Zodiaque Publications. The book covers, in particular, French Classicism, art under Louis XIV and at Versailles, the 18th century, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism, before addressing the major artistic upheavals of the 19th century. It includes numerous reproductions of monuments, paintings, and sculptures, some of which span two pages. This copy is extensively annotated in pencil by a previous reader, mainly beneath certain reproductions: identifications of the works and artists, notably “Courbet, The Wave” and “Manet, Luncheon in the Studio.” These annotations, visible on several pages, constitute the copy’s main flaw. Otherwise, a good copy. The binding is sturdy, and the interior is well-preserved. The dust jacket is complete, with scuffing, small tears, and wear on the caps and corners.
