FOUCHET (Max-Pol) - Lot 131
FOUCHET (Max-Pol) Indian Lands. Lausanne, Éditions Clairefontaine, 1955. Large quarto (approx. 29 × 23 cm), publisher’s hardcover with a color-illustrated dust jacket with flaps, 96 pp. Extensive black-and-white photographic illustrations, reproduced primarily by heliogravure, supplemented by drawings and color compositions inspired by pre-Columbian art. First edition. *Terres indiennes* is a significant work in Max-Pol Fouchet’s career: it is the first book in which the writer truly brought together his own texts and photographs, following his travels and studies among the indigenous communities of Mexico and Guatemala. But above all, this is a very interesting copy, enriched by an autographed dedication signed by Max-Pol Fouchet, dated January 1, 1957: “To Bertrand, whom I love like a brother—present. Max-Pol. January 1, 1957.” The particularly warm wording of the inscription, addressed to a close friend identified only by his first name, lends the copy a personal character far beyond that of a mere courtesy inscription. I would certainly include the full transcription of this inscription in the catalog entry. The book is richly illustrated with archaeological views, landscapes, architecture, and scenes of daily life—particularly in Mexico—giving the work the character of both a photography book and an ethnographic and artistic narrative. The professional bibliography lists 96 pages and up to about 100 photographs, depending on the descriptions of the various editions. Copy with its illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket shows scuffing, small tears, and missing material at the top and bottom edges and corners, as well as some soiling and signs of wear; the hardcover and interior appear well-preserved. The autograph inscription is perfectly legible.
