FORMAN (Werner and Bedřich). - Lot 128
FORMAN (Werner and Bedřich). Art of Distant Lands. The Near East—India—Tibet—China—Japan—the Chukchi Peninsula. Prag [Prague], Artia, 1957. Large folio volume / large quarto, VII-321 pp., very richly illustrated with black-and-white and color photographic reproductions, many of which are full-page and some spread across two pages. Publisher’s binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. The photographs and graphic design are by Werner and Bedřich Forman; edited under the direction of L. Hájek, with texts by L. Hájek, J. Hloucha, L. Jisl, and L. Matouš. The bibliographic record from the National Library of Finland confirms the Artia edition, Prague, 1957, and a page count of VII–325 pages according to its collation. An important album devoted to the ancient and non-European arts of Asia, covering, in turn, the Near East, India, Tibet, China, Japan, and the Chukchi Peninsula. The book is part of a major publishing project undertaken in Prague centered on the photographs of Werner and Bedřich Forman, which was particularly noted for the quality of its images of art objects. The photographs depict sculptures, paintings, miniatures, textiles, ritual objects, and decorative arts, primarily from Czechoslovak collections. An institutional bibliography of the Náprstek Museum lists *Kunst ferner Länder* in two volumes, Prague, Artia, 1957. A fine copy, in very fresh condition inside, with its original photographic dust jacket, which is slightly rubbed and worn at the corners and edges.
