FALGAYRETTES (Christiane), ed. — Sculpted Spoons. - Lot 123
FALGAYRETTES (Christiane), ed. — Sculpted Spoons. Paris, Musée Dapper, 1991. Large square quarto, 192 pp., very extensive black-and-white and color illustrations, numerous full-page reproductions; bibliography. Publisher’s binding with a color-illustrated dust jacket. ISBN 2-906067-12-1. Catalog of the exhibition “Sculpted Spoons,” first presented at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich and then at the Musée Dapper in Paris, from January 31 to April 28, 1991. A remarkable study devoted to traditional carved spoons from sub-Saharan Africa, viewed not merely as utensils but as true sculptures, objects of prestige, or ritual objects. The exhibition brought together more than a hundred pieces made of wood, ivory, bone, and brass. The catalog explores their extraordinary formal and functional diversity: anthropomorphic or zoomorphic spoons, ceremonial spoons, objects of prestige, and vessels used for offerings or ritual meals. Particular emphasis is placed on Afro-Portuguese ivories from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as on works from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and other African regions. The photographs included depict, among other items, Bini-Portuguese spoons, pieces from the Benin court, and several remarkable anthropomorphic Guro spoons from Côte d’Ivoire. 145 works are described and analyzed, accompanied by a rich selection of black-and-white and color photographs. This catalog has become a valuable reference work on a highly specialized field of African art, where everyday objects intersect with sculpture and prestige objects. At the time of the exhibition, *Le Monde* specifically highlighted the artistic quality of these objects and the exceptional variety of forms on display. A very fine copy. The binding and interior are in excellent condition. The original dust jacket is preserved, particularly clean, with only very slight signs of handling and a few tiny marks at the edges.
