EVANS (Walker) - Lot 120
EVANS (Walker) Photographs. Paris, Musée du quai Branly - Nicolas Chaudun, 2007. Large in-4 paperback, 64 pp., with a photographic cover featuring flaps. Catalog published in conjunction with the 2007 Photoquai Biennial and the exhibition at the Pavillon des Sessions of the Louvre Museum. Preface by Yves Le Fur, text by Virginia-Lee Webb. ISBN 978-2-915133-65-3. A beautiful catalog devoted to Walker Evans’s 1935 project on African sculpture. On the occasion of the “African Negro Art” exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Evans was commissioned to photograph a selection of the 477 works on display. He produced a portfolio from which only 17 sets were compiled; the Musée du Quai Branly holds one of the few complete copies and the only “fully mounted” set in Europe. This volume reproduces a selection of 30 life-size photographs by Walker Evans, lending the African sculptures a particularly striking presence. A good copy, with slight marks and signs of wear on the cover.
