EGYPTOLOGY — FECHHEIMER - Lot 112
EGYPTOLOGY — FECHHEIMER FECHHEIMER (Hedwig). — Die Plastik der Ägypter. Berlin, Bruno Cassirer Verlag, 1920. Large 8vo, 59 pp., followed by 168 photographic plates, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, pink cloth spine, front cover adorned with a large photographic reproduction of an Egyptian falcon head, title in black. German edition from 1920, ninth to twelfth thousand, as expressly indicated on the title page: Neuntes bis zwölftes Tausend. It constitutes the first volume of the series “Die Kunst des Ostens,” edited by William Cohn. This 1920 edition now included 168 reproductions; a contemporary advertisement by the publisher specifically announced the release of the 9th through 12th thousand following the rapid sell-out of the previous edition. An important monograph on ancient Egyptian sculpture by the German art historian Hedwig Fechheimer (1871–1942). The author examines Egyptian statuary from a primarily aesthetic and formal perspective: composition, volumes, frontality, the relationship between architecture and sculpture, and the evolution of types and styles across the various dynasties. The work is particularly remarkable for its extensive documentation: 168 black-and-white reproductions, most of them full-page, providing a comprehensive overview of pharaonic statuary—royal and private figures, scribes, monolithic statues, portraits, and monumental sculptures—based on works preserved primarily in Cairo and Berlin. This edition dates from the early years of publication of a work that enjoyed remarkable commercial success for an Egyptological study: originally published in 1914, it had already reached a print run of 9,000–12,000 copies by 1920, then 13,000–17,000 copies by 1922. Copy preserved in its original illustrated cardboard slipcase. The binding is somewhat faded and soiled, with scuffing, small stains, and wear on the corners and caps; the cloth spine is slightly faded. There is a small, old handwritten call number in the upper corner of the title page. The interior is clean and well-preserved, and the plates are in good condition.
