DORSINFANG-SMETS (Annie) - Lot 105
DORSINFANG-SMETS (Annie) Pre-Columbian America: The Maize Civilizations. With contributions from P. Hubot on geography and A. M. D'Ans on linguistics. Brussels, Meddens, 1973. Large quarto, 220 pp., publisher’s hardcover with a color-illustrated dust jacket. Very extensive black-and-white and color illustrations, both in the text and as inserts, including photographs of archaeological artifacts, sculptures, ceramics, architecture, and pre-Columbian sites. Bibliography. ISBN 2-87013-001-6. The page count of 220 and the publication date of 1973 are confirmed by bibliographic records. First edition of this important overview published by Meddens; not to be confused with the author’s earlier work of the same title, published by Bloud & Gay in 1964. A comprehensive overview of the civilizations of pre-Columbian America, ranging from information on the continent’s settlement to the major Mesoamerican and Andean civilizations. The book devotes significant attention to the Olmecs, Maya, Aztecs, and Incas, as well as to intermediate cultures, their social organization, religions, languages, and artistic productions. The illustrations are particularly abundant and spectacular: ceramics, gold and silverwork, monumental sculptures, architecture, and major archaeological sites, some of which are reproduced in full-page color. The photographs notably feature El Tajín and remarkable examples of pre-Columbian statuary. A good copy. The interior is clean and well-preserved. The dust jacket is present but quite worn, with scuffing, creases, and several small tears and missing pieces at the flaps and corners, particularly visible at the top and in the lower right corner.
