PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION — KHMER ART - Lot 104
PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION — KHMER ART One of the ancient arts of Indochina: Khmer art. Paris, Presidency of the Council, General Secretariat of the Government, Documentation Directorate, “La Documentation photographique,” series no. 27, [circa 1948–1949]. Quarto, 12 plates, with a printed and illustrated cover, black-and-white photographs. An interesting documentary booklet devoted to Khmer art and the monuments of Angkor, published in the early years of the “Photographic Documentation” series. Series No. 27 is clearly listed under the title *One of the Ancient Arts of Indochina (Khmer Art)* in an educational publication of the time. Through large, captioned photographic reproductions, the collection presents the main characteristics of Khmer sculpture and architecture from the 7th to the 13th century. Among the works reproduced are, notably, a statue of Hari-Hara from the pre-Angkorian period and a Buddha on the Naga, in the Bayon style; the latter photograph comes from the Guimet Museum. The introductory cover places Khmer art within the history of Cambodia and highlights the role played by the École française d’Extrême-Orient from the late 19th century onward in the study, excavation, and conservation of the monuments of Angkor. The booklet thus serves as an interesting record of the dissemination in France, in the immediate postwar period, of archaeological knowledge about Cambodia and ancient Indochina.
