DIVERSION — No. 41 — New Guinea - Lot 102
DIVERSION — No. 41 — New Guinea [DIVERSION]. — New Guinea. Diversion, No. 41. Paris, Laboratoires Longuet, [circa 1930–1940]. In-4, paperback, black-and-white photographic cover with orange border; abundant black-and-white photographic illustrations; pharmaceutical advertisements. An issue of the illustrated magazine *Diversion* entirely devoted to New Guinea, its people, and its environment. The cover features a remarkable photographic portrait of a chief from the village of Mindimbit, adorned with body ornaments and scarifications. The interior is richly illustrated with documentary photographs: landscapes and boats, villages, dwellings, groups of inhabitants, and scenes of daily life. A graphic composition titled “New Guinea” combines a stylized map, animal motifs, ships, and portraits. One of the double-page spreads is devoted to the peoples of the Sepik region, particularly the Kambri, featuring photographs of dwellings, children, and groups. A spectacular spread on a black background, titled “Black on Black,” brings together several drawn portraits. A publication characteristic of the interwar period or the years that followed, *Diversion* combines geographical and ethnographic reporting, photography, and medical advertising. The issue is thus punctuated by full-page advertisements for products from Laboratoires Longuet, notably Phospho-Strychnal and Urisanine, which are of interest today for the history of pharmaceutical advertising and graphic design. Good overall condition. Cover is slightly rubbed, with minor wear along the edges and corners; a few marks and stains from normal use. Interior is well-preserved, with slight signs of age. This copy remains attractive, particularly due to the quality of the photographic reproductions.
