DALLONI (Marius) — Mission to the Tibesti (1930–1931). Volum - Lot 88
DALLONI (Marius) — Mission to the Tibesti (1930–1931). Volume II DALLONI (Marius), ed. Mission to the Tibesti (1930–1931). II. Paris, Gauthier-Villars, Printer and Bookseller to the Bureau des Longitudes and the École Polytechnique, 1935. Memoirs of the Academy of Sciences of the Institut de France, vol. 62. A substantial in-4 volume, in an old blue half-cloth binding with corner pieces, blue and black marbled paper covers, and a gilt title on the spine: “Mission to Tibesti 1930–1931 – 2.” Second volume of the findings from the major scientific expedition led by geologist Marius Dalloni in the Tibesti Mountains in 1930–1931. This Volume II comprises 458 pages and constitutes the second part of this significant scientific publication; the academic bibliography confirms: Volume I, 1934, 369 pp.; Volume II, 1935, 458 pp. The work brings together significant contributions devoted in particular to the paleontology, prehistory, botany, zoology, ethnography, and human history of the Tibesti. The photographed pages highlight in particular the substantial paleontological section, richly illustrated with figures of stone tools and surveys of Saharan rock art, including depictions of animals. This is a genuine scientific expedition publication, not a colonial popular science work. The expedition studied a region of the central Sahara that was still very poorly documented at the time; its findings cover geology and volcanism as well as the prehistory and peoples of the Tibesti. Volume II is of particular interest for a catalog devoted to Saharan Africa and prehistory, as it notably includes a study of stone tool industries and rock engravings. The BnF correctly lists this volume 62 under “Mission to the Tibesti.” 1930–1931, published by Gauthier-Villars in 1935. The binding is sturdy but shows fairly significant scuffing and wear on the marbled paper of the covers; there are minor signs of wear on the cloth and the corners are slightly worn. Spine is in fair condition; the gilt lettering is still legible. The interior is generally in satisfactory condition: the paper has naturally yellowed, with a few foxing spots or isolated stains, but the pages are clean and the illustrations are well-preserved.
