CRAPLET (Bernard). — Romanesque Auvergne - Lot 85
CRAPLET (Bernard). — Romanesque Auvergne CRAPLET (Canon Bernard). Romanesque Auvergne. Text and plans by Canon Bernard Craplet. Previously unpublished photographs by Gérard Franceschi. German translation by Dom Albert Delfosse, O.S.B., and English translation by Marie Tadié. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Zodiaque, 1958. Large 8vo, 252 pp., numerous black-and-white and color photographs, architectural plans and elevations, publisher’s full gray cloth binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket and cardboard slipcase. “La Nuit des Temps” collection, no. 2. Second edition, lavishly illustrated, of one of the earliest and most iconic monographs in the famous “La Nuit des Temps” collection. Institutional catalogs confirm that this 1958 edition consists of 252 pages, with texts and plans by Bernard Craplet and photographs by Gérard Franceschi. The book offers an in-depth study of Romanesque art in Auvergne, covering architecture as well as monumental sculpture and its iconography. Bernard Craplet focuses in particular on the major Auvergne sanctuaries: Notre-Dame-du-Port in Clermont-Ferrand, Orcival, Saint-Nectaire, Issoire, and Mozac, with extensive architectural and photographic documentation. The book’s richness stems particularly from Gérard Franceschi’s remarkable photographic series, reproduced in large heliogravure plates: general and interior views of the buildings, historiated capitals, Romanesque Madonnas, sculptures, and architectural details. Plans and commentary also provide a detailed analysis of the monuments. A beautiful, complete copy with its illustrated dust jacket and original slipcase. The interior of the volume appears in very fresh condition. The dust jacket is worn, showing scuffing, tears, and small losses along the edges, particularly at the top; the slipcase shows signs of use and wear.
