CRAIOVA (Nana de). — Tibetan Ritual Bronzes. Special exhibit - Lot 84
CRAIOVA (Nana de). — Tibetan Ritual Bronzes. Special exhibition from the Himalayan and Central Asian Archives, Rio de Janeiro. Berlin, Museum of Indian Art, Staatliche Museen Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz, [n.d., second half of the 20th century]. 4to, paperback, silver cover illustrated with a double vajra, black title. Exhibition catalog devoted to Tibetan ritual bronzes from the collection of the Himalayan and Central Asian Archives in Rio de Janeiro. Text by Nana de Craiova. The volume presents a selection of religious sculptures from the Tibetan and Himalayan world, accompanied by detailed descriptions in German specifying the iconography, technique, materials, and dimensions. The reproduced pieces include, in particular, several depictions of Chänräzi (Avalokiteśvara), the bodhisattva of compassion: seated or standing bronzes, sometimes gilded and set with gemstones, shown in full-page black-and-white or color illustrations. The descriptions also address the techniques of casting, gilding, and polychromy used in Tibetan bronzes. An interesting catalog for both the history of Buddhist art and the study of Tibetan statuary and Lamaist iconography. A fine copy. Silver-colored cover showing some minor scuffs, scratches, and signs of wear, with slight wear along the edges and spine. Small handwritten number in pencil at the top of the title page. Interior clean and fresh; well-preserved reproductions.
