CHILDE (V. Gordon) - Lot 71
CHILDE (V. Gordon) The Dawn of European Civilization. Translated and with a preface by Louis Chatelain. Fourth, completely revised edition. With 159 illustrations and maps. Paris, Payot, 1949. “Bibliothèque historique” series. In-8, paperback, publisher’s illustrated cover printed in red and black, 384 pp., numerous illustrations, maps, plans, and archaeological drawings in the text. First French edition, based on the fourth English edition, completely revised by the author. This is indeed the 1949 Payot edition: the BnF lists exactly 384 pages, 23 cm, and the notation “fourth edition.” The wording may be misleading: the “fourth edition” in the title refers to the state of the translated English text; the book was first published in French by Payot in 1949. An academic resource dedicated to the historiography of the Neolithic confirms that Payot published *The Dawn of European Civilization* in French in 1949. This is a major work by the Australian archaeologist Vere Gordon Childe (1892–1957), one of the leading figures in 20th-century prehistoric archaeology. In it, he offers a comprehensive synthesis of the formation of European civilizations since the Neolithic period and examines, in particular, the Balkans, the Aegean world, Italy, and the various prehistoric European cultures, drawing on the archaeological data available at the time. The book is richly illustrated with 159 figures and maps, depicting primarily pottery, archaeological artifacts, plans, and cultural distributions. It is one of Childe’s seminal works on the spread of Neolithic and Metal Age cultures in Europe. Condition: paperback copy in its original illustrated cover. Cover is discolored and worn, with scuffing and creases; small areas of paper loss, particularly at the corners and along the lower edge of the front cover; spine and edges are worn. Paper is uniformly yellowed; interior remains in fair condition. Partially untrimmed copy.
