CHEVRIER (Jean-François) — BALTRUŠAITIS (Jurgis) - Lot 69
CHEVRIER (Jean-François) — BALTRUŠAITIS (Jurgis) Portrait of Jurgis Baltrušaitis & Sumerian Art, Romanesque Art. Paris, Flammarion, 1989. Narrow 8vo (approx. 24 × 15 cm), paperback, cover illustrated with a photographic portrait of Jurgis Baltrušaitis by Robert Doisneau, 271 pp., black-and-white photographs and documents. ISBN 2-08-012038-7. The BnF and several catalogs list 1989 as the publication year for this edition, while some commercial databases indicate a release or reprint in 1992. This edition brings together two complementary texts: *Portrait of Jurgis Baltrušaitis* by Jean-François Chevrier and a reprint of Baltrušaitis’s essay *Sumerian Art, Romanesque Art*, originally published in 1934. Jean-François Chevrier traces the education and intellectual journey of the Lithuanian art historian Jurgis Baltrušaitis (1903–1988), a close collaborator of Henri Focillon and a particularly original figure in 20th-century art history. The study traces, in particular, the transition from his early research on medieval art and the morphology of forms to his famous works on anamorphoses, visual aberrations, and medieval fantasy. The volume is illustrated with historical photographs, as well as photographs by Robert Doisneau and Dominique Auerbacher, and also includes unpublished notes by Baltrušaitis titled *Materials for a Fifth Aberration*. The second part features *Sumerian Art, Romanesque Art*, an important study in which Baltrušaitis traces the Eastern origins of certain forms of Romanesque art. This 1934 work represents a milestone in his early research and foreshadows certain developments in his later work on exoticism and the migration of forms in medieval art. Condition: very good copy. Clean and well-preserved cover, with only very slight signs of wear; interior is fresh.
