BREUIL (Henri, Abbé). — 400 Centuries of Cave Art. The Decor - Lot 59
BREUIL (Henri, Abbé). — 400 Centuries of Cave Art. The Decorated Caves of the Reindeer Age. Paris, Max Fourny, Art et Industrie, 1974. Substantial large-format quarto volume, publisher’s hardcover with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket, 413 pp., numerous black-and-white and color illustrations. A major synthesis by Abbé Henri Breuil devoted to Paleolithic cave art and the great decorated caves. The work, whose original edition was published in 1952, is one of the classics of prehistoric literature. The result of several decades of research, it brings together a considerable body of documentation on the major European prehistoric sanctuaries, notably Altamira, Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume, Les Combarelles, Niaux, and Pech-Merle. A good copy. Dust jacket preserved, with a few tears, small losses, and wear along the edges.
