BONNEMAINS (Jacqueline) & PINETTE (Matthieu) — Australia - Lot 57
BONNEMAINS (Jacqueline) & PINETTE (Matthieu) — Australia, the Dreamtime [AUSTRALIA — ABORIGINAL ART]. — BONNEMAINS (Jacqueline) & PINETTE (Matthieu). Australia, the Dreamtime. Amiens, Musée de Picardie, 2000. Catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition “Australia, the Dreamtime,” organized by the Musée de Picardie in Amiens and on view from June 17 to October 29, 2000. The BnF attributes the catalog to Jacqueline Bonnemains and Matthieu Pinette. Quarto, paperback, color-illustrated cover based on a portrait of an Aboriginal person by Nicolas-Martin Petit; numerous reproductions and documents in the text, in black-and-white and color. An interesting catalog devoted to the cultures and arts of Australia’s Aboriginal peoples, seeking in particular to shed light on the period spanning from Australian prehistory to the first contacts with Europeans. The book brings together ancient visual records—in particular the remarkable portraits of Aboriginal people by Nicolas-Martin Petit and the documents by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur — and then examines the continuity of Aboriginal artistic traditions in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly through works from Arnhem Land. An institutional bibliography on Aboriginal art provides a detailed account of this dual approach. The exhibition benefited from loans from major public collections: the archives of the National Museum of Archaeology notably mention a carved wooden spear thrower, a carved and engraved shield, and a boomerang, while the National Gallery of Australia reports having loaned six works to the exhibition. The catalog also features works by Aboriginal artists such as William Barak and Tommy McRae, thereby giving prominent place to depictions of ceremonies, dances, hunting, and traditional life. Very fine copy. The cover is well-preserved, with only slight signs of handling and a few minor scuffs. The interior is very fresh and clean. A complete copy, firmly bound.
