BALANDIER (Georges) & MAQUET (Jacques), eds. — Dictionar - Lot 45
BALANDIER (Georges) & MAQUET (Jacques), eds. — Dictionary of African Civilizations. Paris: Fernand Hazan, 1968. A substantial in-8 volume, 448 pp., very richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs and reproductions throughout the text. Publisher’s cloth binding, illustrated photographic dust jacket preserved, in its original cardboard slipcase. First edition of this important collective work devoted to the civilizations of sub-Saharan Africa, published under the direction of ethnologists Georges Balandier and Jacques Maquet, with contributions notably from Pierre Alexandre, Hélène Balfet, and Geneviève Calame-Griaule. Institutional catalogs correctly list it as Paris, Fernand Hazan, 1968, 448 pages, and 24 cm. Conceived as an encyclopedic dictionary, the work covers social and political organization as well as religions, rituals, diet, techniques, metallurgy, arts, masks, sculpture, and African material cultures. Today, it also serves as an interesting testament to French Africanist ethnology of the 1960s. The illustrations are of particular interest for the history of African art: some of the reproduced works belonged to major collections. The Smithsonian, for example, cites several objects from the Tishman Collection reproduced in this dictionary. A fine copy in its original dust jacket and slipcase. The dust jacket has small tears and minor imperfections along the edges, particularly at the bottom and in the corners. The slipcase is darkened and scuffed, bearing an old handwritten inscription.
