PRIMITIVE ARTS — CANADA - Lot 40
PRIMITIVE ARTS — CANADA Masterpieces of Indian and Eskimo Art from Canada. Paris, Société des Amis du Musée de l'Homme, 1969. Large in-4, paperback, illustrated cover, [270] pages, very extensive black-and-white photographic illustrations and a few color reproductions. Text entirely bilingual in French and English. An important catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition organized by the Société des Amis du Musée de l’Homme as part of Franco-Canadian cultural exchanges, presented at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris from March to September 1969, then at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa from November 1969 to January 1970. The exhibition, held under the patronage of the French and Canadian governments and curated by Marcel Evrard, brought together an exceptional collection of works by Canada’s First Nations and Inuit peoples. The official Canadian catalog from that period describes 186 works, both ancient and modern, while some bibliographic entries list 185. The volume notably features the arts of the Northwest Coast—the Haida, Tsimshian, and other peoples of British Columbia—as well as Inuit works: masks, carved chests, ceremonial dishes, mortars, sculptures, ritual and everyday objects—each piece accompanied by a detailed entry including dimensions, provenance, collection, and ethnographic commentary. The iconographic documentation is particularly extensive. A beautiful and important reference catalog on Indigenous arts in Canada, of interest both for the history of Indigenous art collections and exhibitions and for documenting the objects held in major Canadian museums. Condition: good copy; interior clean and well-preserved. Cover slightly rubbed, with some signs of wear, small creases, and marginal wear, particularly on the top and bottom edges and at the corners.
