ARAMBOURG (Camille), BOSCH-GIMPERA (Pere), BREUIL (Henri), E - Lot 30
ARAMBOURG (Camille), BOSCH-GIMPERA (Pere), BREUIL (Henri), ELISSEEFF (Vadime), MONTET (Pierre), NAUDOU (Jean), PARROT (André), and VARAGNAC (André) MAN BEFORE WRITING. Edited by André Varagnac. General introduction to the series by Fernand Braudel. Paris, Librairie Armand Colin, 1959. Large square in-8 (approx. 24 × 19 cm), XIV-505 pp., publisher’s hardcover with a color-illustrated dust jacket. “Destins du Monde” series, No. 1, edited by Lucien Febvre and Fernand Braudel. The book is richly illustrated with 8 color plates, 32 black-and-white plates, 115 figures, and 34 maps, both in the text and as inserts. FIRST EDITION, published in 1959; a second, revised and updated edition was published in 1968. An important collective synthesis devoted to the origins of humankind and pre-literate civilizations, bringing together several of the leading French and European specialists in prehistory, archaeology, and ancient civilizations: Camille Arambourg, Abbé Henri Breuil, Father Bosch-Gimpera, Vadime Elisseeff, Pierre Montet, Jean Naudou, André Parrot, and André Varagnac. The volume examines prehistory from a particularly broad perspective: human evolution, the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, hunter-gatherers and the first organized societies, the development of technology and art, and the gradual emergence of the first civilizations. The abundant illustrations combine cave art, archaeological remains, prehistoric artifacts, ethnographic documents, maps, and reconstructions. Upon its publication, the work was praised for the scope of its synthesis and its particularly rich presentation. A very complete copy with its original illustrated dust jacket, a feature often missing. The dust jacket is quite heavily scuffed and worn, with small tears and losses mainly at the top and bottom flaps, corners, and edges; the hardcover and interior appear well-preserved.
