ALLARD (Pierre), LUZUY (Philippe), BOUTANG (Pierre-André), a - Lot 27
ALLARD (Pierre), LUZUY (Philippe), BOUTANG (Pierre-André), and MORAND (Paul) BRONZE FACES. Photographs by Pierre Allard and Philippe Luzuy. Foreword by Paul Morand. Text by Philippe Luzuy and Pierre-André Boutang. Neuchâtel, Ides et Calendes, [circa 1960–1965]. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with a photographic dust jacket illustrated in color on both sides. A major photographic publication devoted to the indigenous peoples of South America, primarily those of the Amazon Basin and Ecuador. The book documents, in particular, the Jivaros, the Cayapas, and various indigenous communities, through their ways of life, their dwellings, their ritual practices, their adornments, and their body paintings. The book is richly illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs—often full-page or double-page spreads—by Pierre Allard and Philippe Luzuy. The spectacular dust jacket, also photographic, features the French title *Visages de bronze* on the front cover and the English title *Faces of Bronze* on the back. Foreword by Paul Morand, with a text by Philippe Luzuy and Pierre-André Boutang. The captions are provided in French and English. A beautiful ethnographic and photographic work from the 1960s, particularly remarkable for the quality and power of its imagery dedicated to the peoples of the Amazon. Condition: copy in its original dust jacket. The dust jacket is worn, scuffed, and peeling, with tears, small losses, and damage to the top and bottom edges and corners. The book block is fragile: the binding is coming apart, and several pages are loose or in the process of coming loose; these were not originally loose-leaf plates. Some foxing, soiling, and signs of wear, particularly on the endpapers and in the margins. The interior is generally well-preserved, and the photographs remain in excellent condition.
